I have created a mosaic washbasin for my caravan which has been installed on a renovated Georgian washstand. So here's how I made it:
I sanded and painted the washstand with purple spray paint. (It had to be dewormed first!!).
Then I created the washtop to be mosaiced out of a sheet of wedi board. I cut the base and then glued the back and right sides on. I wanted to create a splashback at the back and sides to stop water dripping down the washstand and a ledge at the front for the same purpose. The left side and front edge I made from a strip of wediboard that was scored so that it bent and curved a little bit because I didn't want a sharp corner sticking out.
I drew a rough sketch of my design of pomegranates and leaves onto a sheet of tracing paper and used that as a guide for cutting my shapes. Some shapes were cut from sheet glass using a Taurus RingSaw. Other shapes were nipped and some tiles and glass pebbles were also cut with the ringsaw. The design was inspired by the wallpaper which is on the wall next to the washstand in the caravan. I used lots of sheets of coloured glass and some round glass Darling Dotz and small bits of nipped tiles to create the seeds of the pomegranates. I glued all the tiles and glass onto the wediboard with Weldbond which is great and really easy to use.
Now that the washbasin top has been installed. I still need to finish off a few bits and pieces on the corners where it was screwed down onto the washstand. The teeny tiny copper washbasin is from Morocco and I think it looks fab especially next to that intense blue of the tiles. I decided not to put taps behind the washbasin because it was too much hassle at the time. There is space in the corner of the washtop to put a water dispenser.
