Free Motion Embroidery and Exhibition

I recently participated in the Sewing4All and Crafting for Crafters show at the Bath and West County Showground in Shepton Mallet, Somerset. I exhibited some of my embroidered wall art, along with some cards and prints. I also demonstrated how I do free motion embroidery to build up layers of texture on hand-painted silk. I had several pieces of work in progress to show my process and explain how I create the imagery including this piece with the kingfisher and trout. This piece has been painted on silk habutai and then backed with felt.

Diving Kingfisher embroidery by artist Nicky PerrymanThe diving kingfisher was created with a mixture of free motion embroidery and hand stitching along with some appliquéd turquoise silk and some metallic transfer foil in silver. My intention is to build up some more layers of glittery stitching on the fish and use lots of overlapping sequins to give the impression of scales and light as the fish moves through the water. I also want to make some bullrushes and other waterside vegetation such as meadowsweet with hand-stitching and more sequins.

Peacock embroidery by artist Nicky PerrymanThere was plenty of interest in my embroidery and people loved the colours and all the intricate details. I received many compliments and questions. One of the most common questions I had was “How long did it take you?” Well, how long is a piece of embroidery thread?! The most beloved of my work was the Pretty Peacockand I’m pleased say that it sold to a lovely lady who I am sure will enjoy it for years to come. Another piece that flew off the wall was Bee-eater at the Alhambra. It is very nice to have people invest in me as an artist and I’m very grateful.

I also sold several prints and plenty of cards. I also sold the original of this Bullfinch and Dandelion painting which is still available as a print, greeting card and cushion.
